Not everyone is fortunate enough to have perfect skin. If you are someone that suffers from or has dealt with bad skin, you know how much it can ruin your confidence. The skin on the face is exposed meaning that it is not only visible, it’s more prone to damage. This is why the face shows a lot more signs of damage than the rest of your body. Whether its acne, blemishing or dry zones, having problematic skin is never any fun. But don’t fret! There are things you can do to help prevent post-acne blemishing! You know, the dark layer that often shows up after your skin has healed over? Sometimes it can look even worse than the acne. But don’t get discouraged, this article will go over some helpful tips on how to reduce and prevent blemishing.

What are Blemishes in the First Place?

Before going over the tips and tricks, lets define what blemishing is in the first place. Blemishing, sometimes called hyperpigmentation, is a result of your body’s reaction to previous inflammation. In other words, blemishing are skin imperfections that are caused by oil-clogged pores. Although most blemishes fade away over time, they’re still no fun to have. Below are some helpful tips and tricks to try in attempts to avoid or reduce the appearance of these pesky spots. Good luck and remember, it will get better!

  1. Don’t Pick Your Skin!

Picking at your skin is a big, no-no. Yes, it’s tempting to want to squeeze and pop black heads and pimples, but doing so more often than not makes your skin a lot worse. Attempting to extract forcefully can cause even more damage to your skin cells. This makes it much harder for your skin to repair itself. It also creates a build up of sebum which leads to blemishing. Instead, try treating your acne with a routine of cleansing or using a specific acne treatment for your skin type.

  2. Lightly Exfoliate

Exfoliation can help break apart dead skin cells and accelerate the fading process. However, you only want to do this about 3 times a week to avoid stripping your skin of essential, natural oil. Try using an alcohol-free formula. This will help reveal healthier looking skin and speed the process of rejuvenating your dead skin cells.

  3. Avoid Sun Exposure

Ever notice how the sun can make your acne blemishes darker? That’s because UV radiation irritates acne and can either cause blemishing or darken pre-existing blemishes. To avoid this, always make sure you walk out of the house using a good SPF lotion. There are a lot of facial lotions that contain SPF that double act as a moisturizer. Aim for an oil-free product.

  4. Lemon Juice

Here is a natural remedy for you, try applying lemon juice directly to your blemish. The acidity in lemons helps break down dead skin cells and contains lightening properties to help accelerate fading. If you have sensitive skin, try diluting the lemon juice with a few drops of water before applying.

  5. Stay Hydrated

Believe it or not, staying hydrated is a great way to reduce and prevent blemishing. This means both keeping your skin hydrated as well as your body. Invest in a proper moisturizer for your skin type. Typically one that is oil free if you have oily skin. Moisturizer helps keep your skin cells functioning properly. It also helps accelerate repair time. Drinking water has similar benefits. When you drink more water, your skin automatically looks and feels healthier.
