Have you ever gone on a diet for the new year? The world is in an obesity crisis at the moment, with a staggering number of people in the United States being considered overweight or obese (3 out of 4 men, and 2 out of 3 women). Unfortunately, the diet industry doesn’t really help anything. After all, how can you — someone who presumably wants to lose weight — get healthy if you’re fed tons of misinformation? We figured that it would be helpful, in an article about the best and worst diets of 2018, to start with the best. After all, we’re glass-half-full kind of people. So, what’s the most optimistic diet of the year? Well, there was actually a tie. The DASH diet and the Mediterranean diet both ranked as top diets for this year. But, what are they?
The DASH diet is a plan that aims to lower high blood pressure. But, it’s pretty simple — basically just eat like you know you’re supposed to! Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy all have roles in this diet, while junk food and salt do not. On the whole, it can be easy to follow; many people live this lifestyle on a regular basis.
Coming in at a tie with the DASH diet is the Mediterranean diet. Some experts even preferred this to top the list of best and worst diets of 2018. The Mediterranean diet actually got its own pyramid in 1993, and you’ll never guess what’s actually on the bottom of the pyramid: social interaction. Yes, part of the diet is getting out there and, you know, doing stuff with people. As for the food portion, however, you should eat lots of veggies, fruits, legumes, whole grains, and healthy fats like olive oil.
Fish and seafood is next on the pyramid, followed by poultry and dairy, and at the top is meat and sweets, which are kept at a minimum. And, to top it off, you should drink lots of water — but red wine is allowed in moderation! (It’s no wonder this idea ranked #1 on the list of best and worst diets of 2018!)
Somewhere in the Middle Diet of 2018
Coming in pretty much in the middle of the best overall diets list (not super easy to follow, but not bad for you) comes the Nutritarian diet, designed by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. This diet aims to severely limit disease-causing food. In his diet manual, Eat to Live, Fuhrman explains that most diseases could be preventable if only people kept themselves healthier with the right foods. Basically, the diet is somewhat flexible in the long-term, but only after an intensive six-week period of cutting out all dairy, meat, seafood, and limiting many other food groups. So, what can you eat on a Nutritarian diet? Well, Dr. Fuhrman recommends you eat a whole pound of leafy greens a day. It may sound impossible, but testimonials show that this diet has worked for plenty of people, and could work for you.
The Worst Diet of 2018
Well, it’s best not to beat around the bush. Undoubtedly coming in at last place on the diets list for 2018 is the Keto diet. Basically, the idea behind the Keto diet is that you eat a ton of fats and almost no carbohydrates. Seriously, you’re supposed to limit your carbohydrate intake to the equivalent of less than one apple. While cutting down on carbohydrates is always a popular route people take to drop pounds, it has its downsides. Some people experience significant fatigue and even light-headedness when they don’t eat enough carbs.
With the Keto diet, cutting carbs goes to the extreme. Not only do you have to cut out obvious carbohydrates like bread and pasta, but you also have to cut out beans and fruit, two healthy and nutritious food groups. To summarize, experts panned the Keto diet because it’s just plain unsustainable, and not even that good for you.
So, if going on a diet topped your list of New Year’s resolutions, then you may want to see how your prospective plan comes up on this list. After all, the most important thing isn’t getting skinny — it’s getting healthy.
