Cannabidiol, sometimes seen as CBD, is a compound found in the cannabis plant. There are many active cannabinoids in cannabis. One of these, THC, is what intoxicates marijuana users, but CBD is a different compound without the psychoactive side effects. Because it does not interfere with mental or motor functions, CBD is becoming a popular medical alternative to THC, which, as you probably know, is being used to treat several medical problems. Unlike THC, cannabidiol is not used for recreational purposes and therefore has an advantage for being taken seriously in the medical community. Cannabidiol has proven useful in treating some medical conditions, and its safety has made it more popular in recent years. In this article, I will discuss the medical benefits of cannabidiol and other useful information about this compound.
Cannabidiol Is Not Psychoactive
You may be surprised to see so much about a cannabis compound these days, but there is a good reason why there is less of a stigma around it. CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it does not interfere with psychomotor or psychological functions. Because it does not have the mind-altering side effects of the THC compound, CBD may become a viable medical option in the future. I say future because, as of now, cannabidiol is illegal since it is still labeled a Schedule 1 drug due to its cannabis origin. This could change, however, with more scientific evidence for its medical efficacy.
Medical Benefits Of Cannabidiol
Though the side effects of THC do not arise with use of cannabidiol, they do share many of the same medical benefits. CBD has been tested on more animals than humans, so the research does not quite yet support evidence for human use. In this preliminary research stage, however, CBD does appear to aid many medical issues. It has been used to treat schizophrenia, psychosis, epilepsy, anxiety disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, nausea, glaucoma, and others. There is a lot of research on the way!
Cannabidiol Reduces Negative Side Effects
The intoxication and impairment effects of THC contribute to its rarity in official medical treatments. Cannibidiol, however, apparently reduces the negative effects of THC, like intoxication, paranoia, and fatigue. This means that the combination of the two could provide powerful medical relief without any dangerous side effects. It is also promising as a viable medical treatment because it doesn’t have the risk of lethal overdose. The safety and effective nature of the cannabidiol compound makes it an inevitable research subject and treatment in future years.
The Future Of Cannabidiol
Marijuana has been a dirty word for a long time, due mostly to its Schedule 1 rating. Though some places have legalized marijuana, most places still classify every component of cannabis Schedule 1. This isn’t the end of the story, however. There has been a lot of promising research showing that cannabidiol has great potential for therapeutic uses and medical treatment. As I mentioned above, cannabidiol may provide therapy for many serious medical conditions, so it is a promising drug as we look to the future. But further research, especially on humans, will be the true test of this compound’s capacity.
